Aquatic cross-training is used extensively in a variety of sports, but particularly with track and field athletes where it has been more extensively researched. Aquatic cross-training presents significant challenges to the athlete including differences in motor activity, muscle recruitment, impact, and aerobic and cardiovascular performance that will provide a competitive advantage for the athlete who uses aquatic cross-training over the athlete who doesn’t. Overall improvements in strength, o2max, and cardiovascular endurance have all been documented.

Studies suggest that adding water running or cross-training to an athlete's training regimen can increase fitness and ultimately improve performance. Although aquatic cross-training is commonly recommended for runners, many professional athletes including boxers, ice skaters, tennis and baseball players, soccer and football players, and golfers cross-train in the water. Aquatic cross-training enhances the development and improvement of sport-specific movements such as swinging a baseball bat, tennis racket, golf club, or developing stride length and foot placement for basketball or football drills. Aquatic cross-training programs can be designed to focus on teaching the body to move properly against the forces of water due to viscosity.
